A Chevrolet engine mapping update has been introduced at the NTI Townsville 500 as Supercars works to address a fuel economy discrepancy between the Camaro and its Ford and Toyota rivals.
As part of an ongoing assessment, Supercars has been measuring fuel consumption across the field and collaborated with engine supplier KRE on a revised engine calibration which was evaluated during a pre-event wildcard test, with further development expected in the coming weeks.
For Camaro-running teams including PremiAir Racing, closing the fuel gap carries real significance, particularly on circuits where pit stop strategy can win or lose a race. The issue contributed to Supercars recently trimming race distances in the 200km events, and with the Bathurst 1000 approaching in October, getting the numbers right across a six-plus stop endurance race is critical.
The work is described as ongoing; leaning out an engine for economy without compromising driveability or throttle response takes time to get right, but the direction is clear, and the intent is firm.
With more engine development work planned before Perth, PremiAir Racing and the wider Chevrolet contingent will be watching progress closely as the back half of the season unfolds.
