The first of two championship rounds in two days for the Top Fuel competitors at Sydney Dragway’s Australia Day Nationals has seen Peter Xiberras take on Phil Lamattina in the B-Final for a spectacular side-by-side three-second show that had the crowd on their feet.
It was the second side-by-side three-second performance of the night for Xiberras after he matched with Phil Read in round two, with Read winning on a hole shot with his 3.917/456.14kph result to Xiberras’ 3.906/501.87kph effort.
It was also PremiAir Racing’s second match-up with Lamattina Top Fuel Racing for the evening, with Xiberras taking a round one win in that match-up with a 3.918/488.98kph result to Lamattina’s 4.108/394.57kph in blistering hot conditions.
While in the B-Final it was Lamattina who would take the win, Xiberras still couldn’t wipe the smile off his face.
“Races like that is what this is all about,” Xiberras said.
“Side by side, three-eighty passes with full candles all the way to the very end, it doesn’t get any better than that and it is just fantastic to be a part of that.”
“We are always stirring Phil up and we say it is always a good day when we beat Phil Lamattina, but he got it over us tonight and so we say congratulations to him on the win. He’s maybe our ‘nemesis’ but it was very well deserved,” Xiberras smiled.
“Now we can’t wait to come out again tomorrow and do it all again, and hopefully we can run it all the way through to the A-Final!”
