Declan Fraser is putting in the hours away from the track as he chases the qualifying improvement that will take his comeback Supercars season to the next level.
The 2022 Super2 champion is six rounds into his belated return to the main game with PremiAir Racing, and while results haven’t always reflected it, Fraser insists the team made a significant step forward at the Darwin Triple Crown.
Starting slots of 16th, 12th (a career-best) and 19th in Darwin showed clear progress on the grid, and he outqualified teammate Jayden “Juice” Ojeda once across the weekend. A pair of incidents across the weekend affected his race results, but Fraser took considerable confidence from what he saw on the timing sheets.
“Honestly, I feel like the step forward that we made this weekend was massive,” Fraser said. “I know that the results weren’t there and there were a couple of factors that played into that, but in myself I’m very pleased with the step we made.”
“We were there or thereabouts every single session… I feel like we made massive gains.”
So how is Decca sharpening his qualifying edge between rounds, when testing is so tightly restricted? Simple homework.
“I’m constantly every single day going over data, going over footage for the next round,” the 25-year-old explained. “Every day I try to dedicate a couple of hours in the morning and in the afternoon. I try to do it religiously every single day, just trying to learn as much as possible.”
Fraser has also tapped into the knowledge available through the Team Chevy alliance, drawing on insights from drivers across the group as he pieces together a clearer picture of how the PremiAir Camaro responds.
“For me, I’m working relentlessly, and I feel like it’s finally starting to show.”
With Townsville next on the calendar, Fraser arrives with momentum in his pocket and a growing belief that the results are about to follow.
