The Repco Supercars Championship heads south to Tasmania for the 440 at Symmons Plains Raceway, a circuit that strips racing back to its fundamentals. Short, sharp, and relentlessly demanding, this is a track where precision matters, mistakes are costly, and momentum is everything. With limited passing opportunities and no room to hide, execution across the weekend will define the result.

At just 2.4km, Symmons Plains is the shortest circuit on the Supercars calendar, but don’t let the lap length fool you. The compact layout means lap times are tight, margins are minimal, and even the smallest mistake can cost multiple positions.
With the field so closely packed, track position is critical. There’s little time to recover, making every lap and every decision count.
The Turn 4 hairpin is the most important corner on the circuit. It’s the primary overtaking opportunity, but it’s also where races can be won or lost.
Drivers must commit under heavy braking before rotating the car cleanly and maximising traction on exit. Get it right, and it sets up a strong run down the back straight. Get it wrong, and you’re vulnerable immediately.
Despite the presence of a clear braking zone at Turn 4, overtaking at Symmons Plains is far from straightforward.
The narrow layout and limited racing line make it difficult to follow closely through the final sector, meaning drivers often have just one genuine shot per lap. Strategy, tyre life, and patience all play a role in creating those opportunities.
Symmons Plains might look simple on paper, but it demands absolute precision from both driver and car. The heavy braking zone into Turn 4 is one of the key overtaking opportunities and one of the easiest places to lose time if you’re not committed.
Get the car stopped too early or struggle for traction on exit, and you’ll pay the price all the way down the straight.
“Symmons Plains is our shortest circuit on the calendar at only 2.4km long, over 1km of which is in the back straight alone. But, while it might be short, it’s one of the most demanding circuits we go to. Symmons Plains rewards straight-line speed, but also finding the balance in confidence under brakes into Turn 4 and strong traction on exit. If you get either wrong, it costs you all the way down the straight.”
– Simon Hodge, Race Engineer (Car 31)
With limited overtaking opportunities and such fine margins across the field, qualifying performance is crucial at Symmons Plains.
Starting near the front can define the entire race, placing added pressure on delivering a clean, fast lap when it matters most. A strong grid position isn’t just an advantage here; it’s often the difference.
