PremiAir Racing and its fellow Chevrolet Camaro teams faced an unexpected hurdle at the AirTouch 500 at The Bend, after Supercars issued a mid-event parity adjustment that gave Chevrolet competitors minimal time to respond.
The sequence of events began before the round. Following post-Ipswich investigations, Supercars approved revised front splitter skids for the Chevrolet contingent, a decision that drew a swift, strong reaction from Ford teams and their leadership.
Stephen and Brenton Grove of Grove Racing, along with Triple Eight managing director and Ford homologation team representative Jamie Whincup, met with Supercars seeking an explanation and raising concerns about what they described as a breach of the binding Teams Racing Charter, the agreement governing the process by which parity adjustments can be made and when.
Adding to the optics was the fact that Camaros topped all three practice sessions on Friday.
Supercars responded by reducing the maximum rear wing angle permitted for all Chevrolet Camaros by 0.3 degrees, from 8.7 degrees to 8.4 degrees. The change was conveyed on Saturday morning and took effect from Practice 5 at midday local time.
That left Chevrolet teams, including PremiAir Racing, with roughly two hours to understand the change’s impact on setup and balance before qualifying at 2:45 pm local. It was a tight window for any team, let alone one running four enduro drivers across two cars with co-driver combinations still finding their rhythm.
PremiAir Racing made the required wing change and got on with it because that’s what race teams do. The full effect of the adjustment on rear stability and tyre life will only become clear during today’s 147-lap race, where the long stints will test every setup decision.
