Friday the 19th of July at Sydney Motorsport Park has hosted a 90 minute practice session under lights for the Sydney SuperNight Supercars field, with PremiAir Nulon Racing bringing home their Camaros in P17 (#23 Tim Slade) and P21 (#31 Jimmy Golding) respectively.

On both sides of the garage, the team will be busy tonight pouring through data after what was at times a somewhat puzzling session as they look to improve their qualifying and race car set-ups ready for Saturday.

For the #23 PremiAir Nulon Racing Camaro of Tim Slade, the session started out well on used tyres and changes made early led to positive improvement. This saw him sit as high as P9 on the timesheets, however they were unable to find grip on the green tyre later in the outing.

On the other side of the garage, the #31 PremiAir Nulon Racing Camaro of Jimmy Golding was the centre of a flurry of activity for the majority of the session after immediately showing signs that things were not as desired. A list of changes eventually saw some direction found with the race car, however like for Slade in the #23, Golding could not find the speed expected on his green tyre run.

After what will be a long and busy night for the PremiAir Nulon Racing team, the Sydney SuperNight action will continue tomorrow (Saturday 20 July) with qualifying at 3.00pm followed by a Top Ten Shootout at 5.10pm before the first of two races for the weekend kicks off at 7.35pm. Sunday July 21 will host qualifying (12.05pm), a Top Ten Shootout (1.40pm) and another race, with this one getting underway at 4.03pm. For event information, visit www.supercars.com.au

QUOTEBOARD: SYDNEY SUPERNIGHT – FRIDAY 19 JULY 2024

Tim Slade – #23 PremiAir Nulon Racing Camaro

“I thought we were not too bad at the start on the used tyre. That first run was not very straight forward, we did our first lap and then had someone start their lap right in front of us, so we aborted that. I felt as though the first change we made was positive; after that I didn’t get too much of a read and then on the green tyre I had no grip. The lap we did at the start on our second run was our fastest for the session, so we have a bit of head scratching to do as to what is happening on the green.”

Ludo Lacroix – PremiAir Nulon Racing Competition Director and #23 race engineer

“We had a good session on car 23 earlier on we had a pasty car I would say. When we did the camber on the qualifying setup, we didn’t improve. So, we need to understand why fitting the green set of tyres didn’t allow us to go quicker and that is the main issue. We need to use the tyres better; we used two sets of tyres, and both of them did the same thing, so it is not the tyres, it is how we use them. So, we need to find a way to use the tyre on one lap way better, I think the race car is acceptable – we can race in the top ten, but we need to qualify better. “

Jimmy Golding – #31 PremiAir Nulon Racing Camaro

“It was not a great session for us, we struggled to get a direction with the car and didn’t roll out anywhere near anything that we were looking for. We threw a few things at it and got a direction with some things, but we were a fair way into the session at that point. On the green tyre run at the end I thought based on the last couple of change we had improved it but then there was just nothing on the green tyre, if you didn’t tell me it was green I wouldn’t have known.”

Romy Mayer – Race Engineer for the #31 PremiAir Nulon Racing Camaro

“On car 31 we had a pretty tough session; we were struggling with the race car from the start of the session. We made lots of changes trying to find a better balance. We got in the right direction with a couple but unfortunately the quali run also didn’t end up where we wanted to be with the lap times. But we have a whole night to look at the data and come up with a better car for tomorrow.”
