Fresh from the Bosch Power Tools Perth Super 440, PremiAir Racing Team Owner Peter Xiberras and Supercars driver Declan Fraser are preparing to swap the Chevrolet Camaro for a very different racing challenge this weekend at Sandown International Raceway.
Xiberras and Fraser will join Apex Hunters United co-host Elliot Barbour and Peter’s son, Christopher Xiberras, to form a four-driver line-up for the Great Sandown Showdown at the iconic Sandown International Raceway.
Sharing a single budget-built race car, the four drivers will rotate through driving stints across the endurance event, where reliability, teamwork, traffic management and keeping the car circulating will be every bit as important as outright speed.
The announcement continues with a growing motorsport connection between Xiberras and Barbour.
At the recent Winton Festival of Speed, Xiberras handed Barbour the keys to his ex-Graeme Crosby Bob Jane T-Marts Group A VK Commodore. Starting from pit lane on a damp circuit, Barbour charged through the field and ran as high as third position in a memorable drive aboard the historic Commodore.
Now, Barbour will line up alongside Peter and Christopher Xiberras and PremiAir Racing Supercars driver Declan Fraser for an event that takes motorsport back to its grassroots.
Motor Events Racing is built around affordable, social and low-pressure competition. Teams share one car and cycle through their drivers, with the objective of lasting the distance and completing as many laps as possible.
Eligible cars are generally valued at less than $5,000, modifications are controlled through a points system, and vehicles are divided into power-based competition brackets. Events are governed by a gentleman’s driving code, including a strict, no-contact rule, while still placing a strong emphasis on fun, teamwork and camaraderie.
PremiAir Racing Team Owner Peter Xiberras said the event would provide an opportunity to enjoy a completely different side of motorsport.
“This is one of those events that takes racing back to basics. We will have one car, four drivers and one goal: to keep it running and complete as many laps as we can,” Xiberras said.
“Declan is obviously used to racing at the highest level in Supercars, while Elliott showed at Winton that he certainly knows how to get on with the job when someone hands him the keys.
“It will also be great to have Christopher in the car with us. We will all be competitive once the helmets go on, but the main purpose is to enjoy the experience, work together and have some fun at one of Australia’s most iconic circuits.”
For Declan Fraser, the challenge will require a very different approach from a conventional Supercars race weekend.
“I’m excited to be teaming up with Pete, Chris and Elliot; it’s going to be a great weekend and a lot of fun before heading to QR next weekend,” Fraser said.
“The first thing we need to focus on is making it through the long weekend. Looking after the car and managing traffic will be important, especially with different classes out on track. Hopefully we can come away from the weekend with a trophy!”
For Elliot Barbour, the Sandown event follows closely after his opportunity to race Xiberras’ historic VK Commodore at Winton.
“Being handed the keys to Peter’s VK at Winton was genuine bucket-list stuff, and now getting the chance to race alongside Peter, Christopher and Declan at Sandown is another incredible opportunity,” Barbour said.
“The event is about racing hard, having a laugh and working together to keep a budget racer alive. That is exactly the kind of motorsport experience Apex Hunters United loves sharing.”
