There’s a story developing in the Supercars paddock that has more than a few people quietly excited, and PremiAir Racing is firmly in that camp.
The prospect of Supercars returning to Phillip Island is gaining momentum, and it’s not hard to see why. The South Australian government’s aggressive event poaching has left the famous Victorian circuit in need of top-level motorsport to replace the loss of MotoGP and, now, the Superbike World Championship. That combination of circumstances has put a Supercars reunion firmly on the agenda.
For PremiAir Racing, it’s personal.
In four and a half years as a Supercars team, we have never raced at Phillip Island. Not once. That’s a fact that hasn’t sat comfortably with everyone in our garage. Phillip Island is one of the great circuits in Australian motorsport its sweeping high-speed corners, stunning coastal backdrop and rich touring car history make it a venue unlike any other on the calendar.
And no one in the PremiAir camp knows it better than team owner Peter Xiberras. In 2025, Peter competed at the Phillip Island Classic in his fully restored ex-Graeme Crosby Group A VK Commodore a stunning piece of Australian motorsport history. The photo inserted gives you a sense of just how special that car is. It’s safe to say Peter would love nothing more than to see his team racing at the same venue in Supercars.
Team principal Roland Dane knows the circuit well too. During his time leading one of the sport’s most dominant outfits, Dane enjoyed considerable success at Phillip Island making the prospect of returning there with PremiAir Racing all the more meaningful.
The analysis around a return is encouraging. V8 Sleuth notes that paddock sources are upbeat about the lower-aero Gen3 cars putting on a better race show at the Island than previous generations, which could make for genuinely spectacular racing.
There are hurdles to clear, from pit lane infrastructure to commercial negotiations between the circuit and the teams. But the appetite is clearly there.
From where we sit, it can’t happen soon enough.
